A Message from GrandMaster
Darrell F. Hall Jr
I began my training in The Korean martial arts at the age of 11 in 1973. The school was called The Korean Karate Academy in Ashland, Kentucky. It was a branch of the Moo Duk Kwan and the style was known as Tang Soo Do. My instructor Danny Lane, was under the guidance of Master Sok Ho Kang, who brought Korean martial arts to the tristate area.
In 1955 Choi Hong-hi proposed the name Taekwondo to establish a unified name for Korea’s national art. However, it would be many years later before the name was officially accepted. During this period the five major kwans worked toward unifying and building a central gym. On February 6, 1973 the Kukkiwon was established. The Kukkiwon is recognized as the national governing body for all Taekwondo matters, including teaching, testing and Olympic sparring competitions. It is the headquarters of the World Taekwondo Federation.
In 1983 I joined with Master Chong Woon Kim who taught traditional Taekwondo. It was under his tutelage I learned the importance of teaching proper technique and instructing students with various levels of ability. In the 20 years I spent with him, I was given the opportunity to teach at two different clubs and two schools. His leadership was responsible for making me the instructor I am today.
From Mr. Lane I learned how to be competitive and develop my fighting skills. He taught me to have confidence in myself and to not be afraid of challenges I faced as a youth. Master Kong continued to be my examiner during testing, as a child and adult, and his contribution to my training was of utmost importance. It was because of his dedication to the art I had the opportunity to begin martial arts training as a child.
In 2003, after 30 years of training and teaching, I opened Dynamic Taekwondo. In December 2010 Kukkiwon recognized me as an internationally certified Master instructor and made me an overseas recommender certified to test and promote students up to the level of 3rd dan black belt. Our school was also internationally listed with Kukkiwon at that time. I continue to learn all new curriculum set forth by the Kukkiwon and implement it into my teaching and training to this day.
I competed for many years as a black belt and, in the past, I held the title 2 years in a row as the Kentucky AAU state champion in both forms and Olympic sparring. I was also a national champion in the AAU. I was in my late 40’s at that time.
It is my belief that instructors should be role models for students to follow by setting the example of staying in shape with continued training and learning. We should be leaders of good character not only in our schools but in the community around us as well.
I was born and raised in Ashland, Kentucky, am a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School Class of 1979. I am a retired employee of CSX corporation. It is my hope to teach and pass on what I have learned over the last 50 years to many students.
Taekwondo has many benefits with self defense being only an integral part of it. Those who dedicate themselves to the training become leaders and role models for others to look up to. You will learn to be the best at whatever you attempt in life in and outside of our school. Taekwondo is a way of life that continually changes you into a better person if you are properly taught and diligent in your training. You cannot learn everything about it in a few short years.
After years of training and teaching I am still challenged by the many new changes and methods I am presented with. I invite those of all ages to come and see the benefits our school has to offer and to train with me.
